A commissioned instrument begins with a conversation. We talk about the instrument you play, the music you make, what you value in its sound and feel, and what you hope to find in the instrument I will build for you.
YOUR INSTRUMENT
A commission offers the opportunity to shape an instrument around the player without losing the character of the maker. We can discuss the woods, dimensions, playing feel, and selected details that matter to you, while the structural and acoustic decisions remain guided by the methods I use at the bench.
The result is a uniquely custom instrument created through an intimate collaboration between luthier and client.

The prospective owner submits an inquiry describing the instrument they are interested in and what they are looking for as a player. I follow up personally to discuss the instrument, preferences, materials, approximate schedule, and answer your questions.
The principal specifications are agreed upon, including materials, important dimensions, playing characteristics, and selected aesthetic details. A final price and estimated completion window are established before the commission is accepted.
A deposit secures the commission and its place in the workshop schedule. The instrument is then built by hand, with selected photographs available as the build progresses.
The completed instrument is finished, set up, inspected, and photographed. Photographs and construction information become part of the instrument's permanent James Fields Guitars record.
