Every James Fields instrument is built one at a time using carefully selected tonewoods and traditional construction methods. Because each instrument is handcrafted rather than mass-produced, pricing reflects the materials, time, and individual workmanship that go into every build.

The prices below are intended as general guidelines. Final pricing depends on the specific instrument, selected materials, decorative appointments, and any agreed on commission details.

Commissioned Instruments

Final pricing is confirmed before work begins

A commission begins with a conversation about the instrument, materials, playing feel, schedule, and selected details. Once the scope is clear, the price, deposit, estimated completion window, and payment arrangement are confirmed before the commission is accepted.

What You're Paying For

When you purchase one of my instruments, you are not simply purchasing wood and hardware - you are investing in an instrument that has been individually designed, built, adjusted, and documented by a single maker. Every instrument receives careful attention throughout the building process, from the selection of tonewood and shaping of the soundboard to the carefully hand-rubbed finish to the final setup and inspection. Each completed instrument becomes part of the permanent history of the workshop, with its own photographic record and documented provenance.

My goal is not to build the greatest number of instruments. It is to exceed your expectations by building the finest instruments I am capable of making, one at a time.
